From the (relatively) recent newsdesk:

Homeschooling is becoming a more and more popular choice for American parents who are losing faith in the public school system.
Looks like Fred Phelps, along with fellow members of his Westboro Baptist Church, plans to be at Obama’s inauguration.
Zondervan has plans for a handwritten Bible. (We’re not exactly sure why this is a good idea.)
The New York Times Magazine features an article on Mark Driscoll, entitled, “Who would Jesus Smack Down?”
Tim Tebow made John 3:16 the most searched item on Google last Friday.
Oh, and don’t miss the world’s first flying car.

Is it January already?
Well, we are still working on the new site … the site where we will enventually move Pulpit permanently. But as the new site is still in process, and as it is January 2009 already … we will resume posting here for now. What that means is that you no longer have to wait for new Pulpit material.
So, without further ado … let the posting begin.

We’ve received a number of emails, letters, and phone calls over the last couple weeks all wondering the same thing: What has happened to Pulpit?
I must admit that the outpouring of concern has been extremely encouraging … because it means that we’ve been missed. And we appreciate that!
I should also reassure all of you that Pulpit is not ending. In actuality, the website is being completely redesigned and retrofitted (and actually moved to a different hosting location). As a result, we felt it would be a good idea for us to take some time to rethink certain aspects of the blog — hence, the lack of articles over the last couple weeks. (Additionally, the fact that our staff recently finished up a major book project has made the production of new blog material even more difficult.)
So, when will the new, improved Pulpit go online?
Well, not until next year. But, since January, 2009 is just over a month away, the wait won’t be nearly as long as it sounds.
In the meantime, we will periodically post some articles here, just to keep things somewhat interesting. But just so everyone knows, Pulpit 2.0 will be coming to a computer near you just after the turn of the year.

I’m honestly not sure if there has been an event in my lifetime which has garnered as much reaction from the press and from Christians in particular as this election. Of course, the reactions have been all over the map. Some are completely indifferent, some are passionately excited, and some are discouraged and fearful of the prospects the outcome will have on the next four years.
I’ve been particularly discouraged by the amount of panic coming from Christians concerning the results of this race. To listen to some believers talk is to get the impression that events are spiraling out of control. One evangelical leader even wrote a letter predicting a dire set of circumstances by the year 2012 based on his view of unfavorable results of the election.
As I’ve been pondering the election and the implications of the outcome on life, I’ve been consistently challenged and encouraged as I’ve directed my thoughts toward Romans 8:28. It says:
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
As we consider this verse there are 3 vital questions we must answer to help encourage our souls in uncertain times. Continue Reading »
