It never ceases to amaze me how VERY often God puts the same or similar topic on the minds of more than one of His people.

God has really been taking me through a renewed "boot camp" lately, and being a soldier is no joke. Paul really made a statement when he drew this comparison.

Enduring hardship is a term that is almost an anathema to so many in the church, and I mean the church in our country. The talk of sacrificing for your faith has no point of reference in our comfort addicted churches. Having to do without or give something up because we bear the name of Christ is not the expectation of the normal Christian/church goer in our country. We bear no brand marks in our country...nor are we willing to. What does it say to the lost about the worth of our Savior if we are unwilling to undergo any personal discomfort or inconvience (even as it relates to our children) for Him and His cause.

It's an interesting dual focus in this passage. The Christian is a soldier, engaged in an intense spiritual warfare, yet our focus is not on the enemy so much as it is on pleasing the One who calls and leads us into battle. Moreover, our weapons aren't made of flesh or dependent on flesh (2 Corinthians 10:2), but are mighty through God. The power to prevail is found in the purity to please.

(And I promise, I didn't set out to drown in alliteration!)

Great truth!

"Dick" Winters' heroic act on the road to Carentan is played out in the HBO series Band of Brothers. It is a pretty amazing story. Great post. Great way to relate that to our role as soldiers for Christ.

"He is your spiritual Commander-in-Chief"

And the Holy Spirit is our hope and strength. I have learned I'm not much good in my own strength, but when the Spirit of God fills me, and abides with me, I can be a soldier for Jesus. And the sword of the Spirit is such a weapon against the enemy of our souls, that he can not contend, by will always flee. Though he always will regroup and a counter-attack is for sure. In fact, I have learned the battles we will fight here and now can become even more fierce, as we grow older. Satan is relentless, but he must always flee when we resist him in the Word, and the Spirit of truth and love.

Thank you the article.

Having served in the military for 21+ years, I would like to offer the following for consideration.

-In their advertising campaigns, military services try to present the benefits, excitement, and perhaps glamour of the military life/career.

-Consequently many join with the wrong frame of mind and wrong expectations

-Thus when they are confronted with the real demands of the military - hardships, separation from family, and even putting their lives on the line, they are not prepared for that - after all, that is not what they signed up for

-Application: Let's make sure we don't sugar coat the gospel - it is a call to hardship, to picking up one's cross and follow Jesus.
