I have read both books and can attest that the book for parents is a really solid, biblically-based book. I read it after my children were grown but I still really learned from it. After all, we are parents as long as our children are alive. While it is a short, easy to read book, I recommend reading it slowly and re-reading it and praying over it and digesting it...there's just too much in it to not do so. And, buy a copy for your own children once they begin having children!

Nathan,
I have got a question for you about this book. Does JC Ryle give some Biblical grounds for his advice or does he start with a passage and wander off on a tangent? Since I haven't read the book, I was curious to see if his bent was being thoroughly scriptural or more wisdom/experience oriented. I just don't have the time to practical wisdom book these days to read.
Thanks, Steve

As a youth minister, I encounter the problem of uninvolved parents on a daily basis. So many people seem to depend on youth ministers, pastors, and Sunday school teachers to teach their children everything they are to learn about faith. Biblically, that responsibility belongs to parents, not ministers of any type; we are here to help as much as we can, but the main burden of instructing children should be upon the shoulders of their parents.

Thank you for telling us of "The Duties of Parents" by JC Ryle. I'd not heard of it myself.

Though my children are grown, I am still interested in the topic, and would like to be able to pass on the helpful information and insights indicated.
