Obviously, John MacArthur's cries of "Lord Lord" (see Matt. 7)
are fake.

Correction, the last sentence should read:
I am also convinced that Heb. 11:17 is not
about church leadership.

1Cor. 11
2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

In this passage, Paul tells the people of Corinth that even
though following his example is commendable, nevertheless,
a man dishonours Christ if he allows another to exercise
spiritual authority over himself.
I have no doubt that an improper view of church leadership
is the root cause for much of the disunity experienced by
Christians today. I am also convinced that Heb. 11:17 is not
about church leadership.

At CBC, it is our intention that...
The Bible is Central.
We showcase expository preaching.
We seek to maintain a high view of God.
We work to proclaim a biblical gospel.
We have a genuine reliance on prayer.
We have highly committed participants.
We will look to authentic and sacrificial leaders.
We will always be working to plant new churches.

Sad to say we seem to have MANY extremes in the Churches today:
1) Totalitarian Singular Elders; or
2) Complacent members who require the Elders to be their priests and to "do religion" for them. Rather than to study the Scriptures daily and to seek the "good (Spiritual and Gospel) works...prepared beforehand...for us to walk in."

This is the tares who are destroying the work of the Church and the unity "in truth and love", that we ought to exercise.

Excellent article!

Might I suggest one more foundational truth for a true church?

Commitment to Reaching Out to the Lost

As Spurgeon said, "If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms around their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for." 1860.

i agree with all of these, but isn't there one major sign/responsibilit of the Church that is left out in all of this??? what about reaching out? all of these signs are indeed true and necessary within the body, but if one of the signs does not include a heart for those who do not know Christ, then all of this is pretty exlusive, isn't it?

it's touched on a little bit under "Authority of Scripture" but i think outreach should be a sign unto itself. reaching out to the hurting, the poor, the orphan and the widow is a major theme proclaimed by the OT prophets and Christ himself! should this not be one of the major responsibilities/signs of the body of Christ here on earth?
