Don't hold your breath, Nathan. I love expository preaching. John R. MacArthur and J. Vernon McGee are excellent examples of expository preaching.

But Jesus is an excellent example of preaching as well. There is no single style of Biblical preaching. Anyone who says otherwise, in my humble opinion, is a slave of one particular cultural form.

Expository preaching, as much as I appreciate it, is a cultural style.

"Well first, because it is a biblical mandate."

scripture for this? Where does the bible mandate that we preach word-for-word thru the scriptures? Not trying to be divisive, just trying to see where he is coming from.

Great post Pastor Macarthur,

In my own preaching I follow a very similar methodology and I am convinced that God honors His word. I do not always follow a schedule right through a book, but I always preach the text inductively in a way that allows the text to speak directly. This a good post and these are good and trustworthy insights. Thanks for them.

Many Blessings!

Yesterday I sent a comment. Where is it now? Is my comment not objective? Is this a discussion room for believers looking for truth? I'm waiting for reply so that I have confidence on "Charismatic Chaos" in relation with "Objective and Biblical Truth". Why don't you correct me if i'm wrong? Is it polite for a Christian to do that? Speaking of objective truth on line, but the attitude is not reflecting the truth itself? Where could I go on looking for the answer if not from the closest resources? Could you just, in the name of Jesus, sent it back to my email, please?

Good post. Pastor John is one of the best preachers in the Church. The Church is blessed to have him. he may cause controversy at times, but he is a genuine preacher after God's own heart. Jer. 3:15

Many today think preaching through the books of the Bible is boring, and dusty and dry.
Satan deceives and tempts very subtly. He doesn't completely disregard the Word of the Lord, but he says, "We sometimes need to put the Bible away, and simply get alone with God:And pray to God, and listen for God.

The Bible is a treasure. It's God's most precious gift to His people; His Church; His children. He also gives us Himself through the Holy Spirit, so the Holy Spirit can open our understanding to His truth, and so grow in the knowledge of the love the Lord Jesus has for us, and so our hearts shall rejoice with joy unspeakable, and our soul will become strong, and our hearts bold for the Gospel.

"And I said I didn’t need to give an intricate philosophical defense, because this is exactly what Scripture says, and there is no need to defend it. You just proclaim it."

That makes so much sense it hurts. One battles unbelief with belief -- it makes perfect sense from a Biblical viewpoint to battle post-modernistic thought with the truth of God's Word.

If we cannot trust the Word, then how could we trust God?

<i>"See these guys were struck by the fact that what they heard was an absolute authoritative statement of a worldview that takes on postmodernism, without having to fuddle around and make all kinds of philosophical and rational arguments, and without having to answer every objection that arises."</i>

That's the money quote for me. Absolutely beautiful. Truth-in-Love from the Word of God.

Getting wrapped up in refuting the philosophy of the day is typically ill-advised. If one does as Dr. MacArthur suggests - just sticking with the Bible - one will likely find himself able to confront any question that arises. I lean toward heavy immersion in the scripture; it will prepare us thoroughly for the days in which we live. Good thoughts.
