Because of John MacArthur I have surrendered my life to Christ. I pray that Mr. MacArthur never forgets what he so well teaches and stands for. Unleashing God’s truth one verse at a time. Is there any other way? Thank you Mr. MacArthur!

Lord I pray for Carl as he prays for his family with a broken heart! This is all too common. Thank You Lord, that Carl has chosen You over his family. Thank You for honoring his obedience to You. Please make Carl’s sowing bear much fruit. Keep praise on his lips even though he cannot see the seed taking root. Thank You that Your word is the sharp truth to cut to the heart of those who truly seek You. Bring brothers alongside to hold Carl’s hand up and pray alongside of him for his deceived loved ones. Thank You for the encouragememnt I receive from the wisdom shared at this website. Amen!

I have family and friends that are active members in an emerging church. I share these truths with them, and they totally and emphatically disagree with me. They say I am to harsh and judgemental. My brother, who is a member tells me he believes the same fundamental doctrines as I do,only the emerging church has found a way to reach people with the same gospel, in a different way. I argue that there has to be evidence (fruit) transformed life, when you call yourself a Christian (follower of Christ). Do I continue to engage them with sound doctrine (teaching)? They just get angry with me, and accuse me of not loving them. These are my parents and brother so I cant dis-fellowship with them. We are not like minded at all. What is my responsibility to them when it comes to family fellowship?

In the mid eighties, when I first started teaching, I was teaching at one of the early CGM churches in Dallas. One Sunday the minister of education pulled me aside after the teaching time and told me I was teaching too much doctrine and needed to be teaching application lessons. My response to him was, “Bill, they can’t apply what they don’t know.” He stared at me for a few seconds, and then walked off.

Doctrine is foundational and ultimately practical because it speaks to every area of our life. Without doctrine we have nothing to apply.

Well said. I read a sermon by your father in Dr. Robert Sumner’s paper recently. I see his fruit did not fall far from the tree. Good job.

The reason sound doctrine isn’t tolerated is because it doesn’t tickle the ears. What is so sad but true is the plethora of pastoral ministry books that don’t use the Scriptures as the basis for their methodology. Imagine a book on how to preach that hardly refers to God’s Word. That may seem ironic but is the temperature of this culture.
