The Lost Tomb of Jesus?
February 26th, 2007
For those who have heard about the upcoming Discovery Channel special (asserting that Jesus’ remains have been found in a Jerusalem tomb), here are a few resources you may wish to read:
Amos Kloner’s interview with The Jerusalem Post
Andreas Kostenberger’s response
Ben Witherington’s response (more here)
Ben Witherington’s review of the new book
Tim Challies’s review of Al Mohler’s TV appearance
Todd Bolen’s summary of the evidence
Jeff Down’s comprehensive list
Josh McDowell’s “Evidence for the Resurrection”
Gary Habermas’s “Experiences of the Risen Jesus”
Ravi Zacharias’s series on the Resurrection
John Piper’s “Eight Reasons Why I Believe That Jesus Rose from the Dead”
We will do our best to pass on additional articles and resources as we become aware of them.
The Witherington protests too much, methinks!
Was it only 5 years ago when Ben Witherington claimed the “James Ossuary” as proof of the existence of Jesus Christ and as PROOF AGAINST the Ever-Virginity of the Mother of God? Was it only 5 years ago when BW was all over the news breathlessly arguing for the authenticity of his bone-box and revealing his humble belief that he was somehow chosen (like some Holy Prophet) to deliver this good news to the world and the bad news to the poor, benighted Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians?
Surely Witherington must realize by now, even as he is being used anew by the enemies of the Faith (Cameron & Co. have linked Witherington’s “James Ossuary” to the “Jesus Tomb!”), that he was never a Prophet but always just a pawn.
Witherington uses his “James Ossuary” against the Ever Virgin, Theotokos, Mary:

Witherington never disavowed his own ship/ossuary full-o-holes, and now that fraud is being tied to an even greater and possibly more dangerous fraud.

Truly appreciate these links. I will check them out.
“Speaking the truth in love, and contending for the faith”.
This should prove to be a fantastic God-given opportunity to share the gospel. Christianity depends on the resurrection of Christ. Our faith is grounded in objective reality and the entirety of the Christian faith rest on the death and resurrection of Christ.
IF (and just assume for a moment) Jesus remains have been found we can stop the preaching, teaching, and defending the faith. Life will change from self denial to self fulfillment. We can all start to give into our natural tendencies that have been called sin and start to indulge in things of this world. I’ll be among the first to toss my bibles, commentaries, and books. The way we talk to others about this special should be presented just this way. In reality this is what Paul was saying in 1 Corinthians 15:12-20.
However…If the special is wrong and Christ did rise…It validates all of Scripture and we had better listen to what God has said.
It’s really all just basic logic.
Let’s let the world know that IF Jesus is still dead we have nothing to hold onto. Let’s let the world know that we don’t hold to our faith because it offers a nice moral system or nice principles to live life by. Our faith is not a faith that is based on ideas and opinion. It is based on a RISEN Christ. It is based on a public event. Not a private personal revelation. You can take Buddha out of Buddhism or Mohammed out of Islam but a Christianity with out Christ is nothing.
Let’s let the world know we are ready and willing to toss our Bible IF Jesus is still dead…But let’s also confront them with what a living Christ means.

I am a new Christian, and this makes me feel sick to my stomach.
Satan is surely working hard and fast to destroy Jesus and fight his battle with God. Just another nail in the coffin of humanity but for the Believer in Jesus Christ it’s another sign of His soon coming. We must keep looking up for His return and continue the great commission He so commanded us to do. Our job here is not done yet….but soon.

[…] Much more could be said about all this (and indeed has been, per the sites we listed yesterday). As we noted then, we will try to keep you updated as more information is made available. In the meantime, don’t lose any sleep over “The Lost Tomb of Jesus.” It is simply not a serious challenge to the central doctrines of the Christian faith (despite the hype its producers are trying to create). I can’t imagine Jesus’s family carefully laying evidence out that Jesus’s body (In a box) was not resurrected when they proclaimed that he had risen! If anything - they would have hidden it!

The foundation of Christianity lies in faith. I reassure you all that Jesus died for all of our sins. You will never find proof. That is why it is called Faith. If there were proof, everyone would be a Christian. Dismiss this film as bunk and go forward in your faith.

[…] I probably wouldn’t have devoted too much space to this, but I have already had one reader email me to ask what I thought. About the same time, I was made aware of a post on this issue over at my friend John Chitty’s blog: The Misadventures of Captain Headknowledge. In his post, he linked to Pulpit Magazine’s compilation of online resources concerning this claim. […]
[…] There are plenty of places to read expert critiques of the specific scientific and archaeological issues surrounding this story. The most notable (in my humble opinion) come from resurrection expert Dr. Gary Habermas and the legendary Western Michigan University Professor of History, Paul Maier, whose 1994 novel ,”A Skeleton in God’s Closet,” was based on a parallel premise.
