Connie,

I too suffered for years with being bi-polar. I started medication awhile ago and things are now fine.

One of the biggest problems I suffered while being depressed was the sense of guilt I had. I knew, in my head, that there was no reason for me to be depressed. None.

I too would like to see a the difference between" spiritual/soulish despair and the kind that is indeed part of an illness body and soul." We are body and spirit. They interact. They have an effect on each other. It takes much discernment to know.

And hope should always be grounded in Christ. There is nowhere else we can turn...

I hope you would differentiate between spiritual/soulish despair and the kind that is indeed part of an illness.

I am a Christian and also suffer from a mild form of bipolar disorder. I suffered needlessly for years until I got a diagnosis and treatment. God did indeed carry me all that time (which I am sure saved my life) but it was and is His will for my disease to be treated.

That having been said, I do agree with your post in general.

I'm reminded of a secular radio show I heard, where the guest was a liberal chaplain who dealt with terminally ill patients and their family. His goal was to comfort people regardless of their religious views. He had no belief in absolute truth or salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. In a sense, we can give people a false hope which has a placebo effect, yet it gives them no hope for eternity. That reminds me of secular, suicide help lines. People's motives may be sincere, yet horribly misguided.

Joyce,

Thanks for the "Amen!" Thanks, also, for asking about links. You are welcome to link here as much and as often as you would like.

Jeff,

Thanks for your comment. As you noted, it is sad. But, without Christ, the best man can offer is the wisdom of man. Just another example of why the gospel is so desperately needed. Also, in answer to your question: Yes, it is from chapter 30 of Living a Life of Hope.

I hope you both had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Nathan,

Excellent points. Sad that a suicide crisis center would send people chasing after their tails like they do, pursuing a false hope grounded in their own humanism and frailty. Your post is a great reminder of the lasting hope found in our great GOd and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Out of curiosity, is this from your book?

In Him,
Jeff
